Schedule Control
Schedule control is the practice of preventing construction delays rather than reporting them. It works by identifying constraints — the specific missing decisions, materials, approvals, or crews that will block upcoming work — and clearing them before the work is scheduled to start, typically on a rolling three-to-six-week look-ahead.
Schedules do not fail on the day they slip. They fail weeks earlier, when a decision was not made, a submittal was not approved, or a long-lead item was not ordered. The slip is just when the consequence becomes visible.
Constraint removal inverts the usual reporting relationship. Instead of asking "are we on schedule," which produces a defensive answer, we ask "what will stop the work planned for three weeks from now" — which produces a list. Lists can be assigned, dated, and closed. Every item gets a named owner and a due date, and open constraints are reviewed at a fixed weekly cadence that does not move.
The cadence matters more than the tooling. A mediocre schedule reviewed reliably every week outperforms an excellent schedule reviewed when someone remembers. Consistency is what turns a schedule from a document into a control.
